Your body weight is only one piece of the picture.
A QuadScan Body Composition Assessment uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to provide greater insight into your body composition, hydration and cellular health.
Rather than focusing solely on weight or BMI, QuadScan allows us to look at factors such as body fat, lean mass, muscle mass, body water, metabolic rate and phase angle.
This information can be particularly useful when you are working towards improvements in your nutrition, health, fitness or body composition and want a more meaningful way of tracking your progress.
What is Body Composition?
Body composition describes what your body is actually made up of.
When you step onto ordinary scales, the number you see represents the combined weight of your muscles, fat, bones, organs, tissues and body fluids.
It doesn't tell you what has actually changed.
For example, your weight may stay exactly the same while you:
• lose body fat
• gain muscle
• improve your hydration
• change your ratio of fat mass to lean mass.
This is one reason why relying on body weight or BMI alone can sometimes be misleading.
Body composition analysis gives us additional information that can help us understand these changes and monitor trends over time.
What is Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)?
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, or BIA, is a non-invasive method used to assess body composition.
The QuadScan passes a very small electrical current through the body and measures how the body's tissues respond to that current.
Different tissues conduct electricity differently.
Lean tissue contains a relatively high proportion of water and electrolytes and therefore conducts the electrical current more easily, while body fat provides greater resistance.
Using these measurements alongside information such as your height, weight, age and sex allows the QuadScan to provide estimates of several different aspects of your body composition.
The assessment itself takes only a few minutes. You lie comfortably while electrodes are placed on the hand and foot to take the measurements.
What Can a QuadScan Measure?
Your QuadScan assessment can provide valuable information about several areas of your body composition and health.
Body Fat Percentage
Rather than simply looking at how much you weigh, we can assess the proportion of your body made up of fat mass and track changes over time.
Fat-Free & Lean Mass
Monitor changes in your body's fat-free mass, including muscle and other lean tissues.
This can be particularly useful when increasing resistance training, changing your nutrition or working towards body recomposition.
Muscle Mass
Tracking muscle mass can help us determine whether your nutrition and training program is helping you maintain or build lean tissue.
This becomes increasingly important during weight loss and as we age.
Total Body Water
QuadScan provides information about your body's water distribution and hydration.
Because hydration can influence body composition readings, monitoring body water also gives us important context when interpreting your results.
Fluid Balance
The assessment provides information about intracellular and extracellular fluid, helping us better understand how fluid is distributed throughout your body.
Basal Metabolic Rate
Your estimated Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) represents the amount of energy your body requires at rest.
This information can be useful when developing personalised nutrition and fitness strategies.
Phase Angle
One of the particularly interesting measurements provided by QuadScan is phase angle.
Phase angle is calculated from the resistance and reactance measured during BIA and provides information relating to cellular integrity and body cell mass.
Rather than looking at one result in isolation, phase angle can be particularly useful when monitored over time alongside your overall health, nutrition and body composition.
Changes Over Time
Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of body composition testing is the ability to monitor trends.
Instead of asking:
“Have I lost weight?”
we can ask:
“What has actually changed?”
Have you lost fat?
Have you maintained muscle?
Have you gained lean mass?
Has your hydration changed?
Is your training program producing the changes we want?
That gives us far more useful information than the bathroom scales alone.
Who Can Benefit From a QuadScan Assessment?
QuadScan body composition testing may be useful if you are wanting to:
• Lose body fat while maintaining muscle
• Build muscle or improve body composition
• Monitor the results of strength training
• Improve your nutrition
• Track progress during a health program
• Better understand your hydration
• Establish a body composition baseline
• Monitor changes as you age
• Support your fitness or sporting goals
• Understand why the number on the scales isn't changing even though your body is.
It can also be valuable for people beginning a new nutrition, naturopathy or fitness program who would like objective measurements that can be reassessed over time.
More Than Just Weight Loss
QuadScan isn't only for people trying to lose weight.
At Lotus Naturopathy & Massage, we are interested in health, strength and body composition — not simply making the number on the scales smaller.
For someone undertaking resistance training, for example, maintaining the same body weight while losing fat and gaining muscle may be an excellent result.
Similarly, during a weight-loss program, we want to know whether the weight being lost is predominantly body fat rather than valuable lean tissue.
Being able to distinguish between these changes allows us to make more informed decisions about your nutrition, exercise and overall health strategy.
QuadScan at Lotus Naturopathy & Massage
QuadScan Body Composition Assessments can be incorporated into your Naturopathy, Nutrition or Fitness Coaching program at Lotus Naturopathy & Massage.
Regular reassessments can then be used to monitor your progress and help guide adjustments to your nutrition, lifestyle or training program.
Standalone QuadScan Body Composition Assessments are also available.
Your results will be explained to you so that you understand what the measurements mean and, importantly, how they relate to your individual goals.
