The Magnesium Guide

Introduction: Are You Taking the Right Magnesium?

This guide breaks down the most common forms of magnesium, how they work in the body, and why the magnesium supplements I stock at Lotus Naturopathy & Massage are practitioner-only and carefully chosen for real results.

Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical processes in the body—supporting everything from your energy and sleep to your mood, hormones, muscles, and even blood sugar regulation.

But walk into a chemist or health food store, and you’re hit with a confusing wall of choices—magnesium oxide, citrate, glycinate, threonate, orotate... it’s no wonder clients often tell me:

“I know I need magnesium, but I don’t know which one to get!”

Different Types of Magnesium & What They're Best For

🟣 Magnesium Citrate

  • Best for: Constipation, general magnesium support

  • Pros: Good absorption, draws water into the bowels

  • Cons: May cause loose stools if too much is taken

🔵 Magnesium Glycinate (Bisglycinate)

  • Best for: Stress, anxiety, muscle tension, PMS, sleep

  • Pros: Highly bioavailable, calming, gentle on digestion

  • Cons: Slightly more expensive than citrate

🟢 Magnesium Malate

  • Best for: Energy production, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia

  • Pros: Helps ATP (energy) production

  • Cons: Can be stimulating—avoid close to bedtime

🟡 Magnesium Threonate

  • Best for: Cognitive health, brain fog, memory

  • Pros: Crosses the blood-brain barrier

  • Cons: High cost, not widely available

🔴 Magnesium Oxide

  • Best for: Occasional constipation

  • Pros: Cheap, widely available

  • Cons: Very low absorption (~4%), not recommended for deficiency

⚪️ Magnesium Taurate

  • Best for: Heart health, blood pressure, calming the nervous system

  • Pros: Combines magnesium with taurine for cardiovascular support

  • Cons: Less common in retail supplements

🟤 Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt)

  • Best for: Bath soaks for muscle tension or detox

  • Pros: Absorbs through the skin

  • Cons: Not for oral use unless prescribed

🟠 Magnesium Chloride

  • Best for: Topical use for cramps or local pain

  • Pros: Transdermal absorption

  • Cons: May sting sensitive skin

The Forms Found in Your Practitioner Products

The supplements I stock in clinic use therapeutic, bioavailable forms that are more effective and better tolerated than most retail products.

✅ Magnesium Amino Acid Chelate

  • What it is: Magnesium bound to amino acids (such as glycine)

  • Why it’s better: Highly absorbable, gentle on the digestive system

  • Best for: Nervous system support, muscle relaxation, stress resilience

  • Found in: Nutra-Mag BioMuscle, Mag Restore, MediMag Calm, MediMag Cognition

✅ Magnesium Phosphate Pentahydrate

  • What it is: A phosphate-bound magnesium salt

  • Why it’s better: Supports ATP (energy) production, neuromuscular health

  • Best for: Energy, cardiovascular function, muscle tone

  • Found in: Mag Restore, BioMuscle, and other MediMag blends

These forms are superior to magnesium oxide, which is commonly used in over-the-counter products but poorly absorbed and often causes gut upset.

Why I Only Recommend Practitioner-Only Supplements

There’s a huge difference between practitioner-only brands and what’s on supermarket shelves. Here's why:

  • ✓ High-quality, bioavailable ingredients

  • ✓ Free from unnecessary fillers and sweeteners

  • ✓ Therapeutic dosages that actually deliver results

  • ✓ Carefully combined with synergistic nutrients (e.g., B vitamins, taurine, herbs)

  • ✓ Backed by science and prescribed with clinical insight

When it comes to magnesium, not all supplements are created equal—and the wrong form could mean you’re wasting your money or even making symptoms worse.
